These are the "tier two" carriers, halfway between a basic Carrier and a Titan. They lack the Titan's "Ultimate Weapon," but carry a clone vat etc. and function as a mobile station. If you call them "mommyships" or "moms" you are a pubbie faggot.
[edit] Overview
Motherships are supercarriers. They have the ability to hold up to six battleships in their hangar (depending the on volume of the carried ships), and can field three fighters per level of Racial Carrier, for a maximum of twenty five (assuming 5 Drone Control Units are fitted). Motherships can also fit up to five warfare link modules - one per level of Racial Carrier. They are immune to all forms of electronic warfare, including warp scrambling, making them extremely difficult to kill. Like carriers, motherships move via cynosural fields - albeit with a shorter jump range. Motherships can also fit the Clone Vat Bay and Remote ECM Burst modules.
In order to balance the mothership ewar immunity, they are unable to dock in stations. This leads to them relying upon starbase shields when not in direct combat. Band of Brothers were known for deploying their motherships and even their titan next to stargates, stations and enemy POSes solely because of their immunity to warp scrambling, although this changed when Shrike got headshotted - now they rarely leave the shields.

[edit] Number of Motherships in game
Even attempting to keep a list of motherships is god damn retarded, as the number of motherships has literally exploded and there are simply too many in the game to keep track of. (According to the Q2 2009 economic newsletter there were about 400 'active' motherships at the end of that quarter.)
Prices start at 12 billion ISK to provide minerals for a basic hull, and production costs, vulnerability when in construction, and fittings can drive this cost sky high. At the time of writing, motherships are regularly traded at approximately 15 billion isk even without high-end fittings.
