Chimera
Chimera
The Chimera’s design is based upon the Kairiola, a vessel holding tremendous historical significance for the Caldari. Initially a water freighter, the Kairiola was refitted in the days of the Gallente-Caldari war to act as a fighter carrier during the orbital bombardment of Caldari Prime.

It was most famously flown by the legendary Admiral Yakia Tovil-Toba directly into Gallente Prime’s atmosphere, where it fragmented and struck several key locations on the planet. This event, where the good Admiral gave his life, marked the culmination of a week’s concentrated campaign of distraction which enabled the Caldari to evacuate their people from their besieged home planet. Where the Chimera roams, the Caldari remember.

[edit] Overview

The Caldari Carrier.

The Chimera is the only shield tanking carrier, now that the Nidhoggur has been reworked into an armor tanker. It can fit a very strong tank which matches or even sometimes exceeds that of the Archon.

When starting a purpose-built alt for carriers (or deciding which one to buy on EVE-O/from another goon), most pick an Archon or Thanatos pilot, as both are generally more situationally useful than a Chimera - they have slightly better or equivalent combat capabilities than the Chimera, and their larger number of lowslots gives them more overall versatility. However, if you're a Caldari fan, the Chimera is a fine carrier, and the Phoenix is also quite good as well for if/when you train for dreads. (Note: Phoenixes fall way behind the Moros and Rev in terms of usefulness in both PVP and Tower Sieging.)

It used to have a tiny model that was smaller than a Megathron or the similar-looking Rokh, and it was a running joke that newbies would mistake a Chimera for a battleship. It has since been fixed (unfortunately).
